NewYards aims to challenge the typical notion of suburbia and introduce a new form of infill housing in Kelowna, where residents can have affordable and compact units but still have a comfortable lifestyle with privacy and outdoor spaces. The design maintains the character of the neighborhood and the existing houses by introducing similar roof lines to the form of the building, but in a new way that is more modern and unique, following the changing pace of Kelowna. The material and color palate in the project are also reflective of the surrounding area.
(Infill Challenge Design Competition 2.0 - Academic project supervised by John Enright).
The outdoor spaces are all unique and relate to each unit in the building. It is intended to be a space where residents can relax, interact and be in contact with the surrounding nature. Instead of the traditional backyard situation that exists in the neighborhood, NewYards aims to break with this concept and introduce a multi oriented yard typology. By pushing the massing to the back of the lot and shifting the units on the front, different outdoor areas are created. Open spaces and gardens are located at the front, back and side of the building, as well as on different locations on the roof.
