If one of the unique qualities of zaniness, according to Sianne Ngai, is about “the strenuous relation to playing that seems to be on a deeper level about work” then it could be argued that digital environments are zany ones par excellence. This is most obvious in digital interactive games but also in digital modelling environments. The former’s tension of work/play has to do with the sense of detachment from real-life physical consequences while performing intensive simulated tasks.
